the Strength in Style Reel

One of the most inspiring aspects of Strength in Style 2023 was the choice of models. Rather than relying on professional models, we invited members of the cancer community, and nurses and siblings from the Children's Hospice South West to take the spotlight. This empowered those living with cancer and other life-threatening conditions and showed the strength and resilience of the individuals within these communities.

We chose to use local independent fashion retailers rather than the big chain stores; we wanted to showcase the unique fashion offering which exists within the city, and to support our local businesses. Our retailers – Blue, BoHo, Grace & Mabel, Portman and Tillion Kids – loved being involved.

Including a set in the show on sustainable fashion with clothes sourced from local charity shops was immensely important for the team. This way of shopping reduces waste and lessens the load on landfill while supporting our local charity shops and encouraging others to use them. And the sustainable set was also a fun way of challenging the notion that fashion has to be new and expensive. By highlighting the potential for unique and stylish fashion finds in charity shops, we were showcasing a creative way of marrying style with sustainability.

“The show left me smiling for the rest of the week. The positive energy in the room was infectious and seeing the pride and beauty of the models on the cat walk was so special. Watching them change from apprehensive participants to confident models as the love in the room engulfed them was quite emotional. The collaboration of children’s services and adult services, families and friends is an aspiration we all have and this event achieved. Well done teams!”

“Taking part in the Strength in Style Fashion Show was the absolute highlight of my year. I am living with incurable cancer and We Get It have given me opportunities like this to really embrace living. I was nervous to take part and it was completely out of my comfort zone but strutting my stuff down that catwalk gave me so much confidence and made me feel like I really could do anything. It was great to share the experience with friends from the cancer community and meet the other models too, we had so much fun. It meant so much to me that my family were also part of this amazing experience. I hope they will always remember that evening, I know I will.”

“Taking part in Strength in Style was a definite first for me and way out of my comfort zone. I decided to take part to support the amazing collaboration between the 3 charities involved and my fellow We Get It volunteers and models. I found it daunting at first but I relaxed into it and felt at ease with all the other models. The day itself was a huge success and the adrenalin and excitement carried us all through. We all felt extremely proud and lucky to be in such an event.”
