We Get It & Macmillan: coffee morning and charity spin event
On Friday 27th September, Walcot House hosted a brilliant Macmillan coffee morning. But this wasn’t any ordinary coffee event with a few cakes. They also organised a two-hour charity spin session downstairs, set to banging Ibiza classics. All the money raised from the cakes and the cycling challenge was in aid of We Get It and Macmillan. Our founder Laura went down to help raise some cash and revisit her youth…
I was so excited to take part in Walcot House’s charity cycling challenge, along with Jess from Thrings and Jack from our We Get It community. Downstairs in the Walcot House basement at 9.30 in the morning, there was something special happening. We had a DJ, two spinning teachers on stage, a big screen, some amazing tunes and flashing disco lights. I was handed a goodie bag and towel. The music was getting my adrenaline going and I was ready for the challenge – did I mention I have a competitive streak? I was raring to get started and raise money for two great causes.
As soon as I got on the bike, the instructors motivated us to ramp it up, providing us with quizzes and prizes during the spin. (I didn't win, which was disappointing, even though I answered a question right with Jack’s help.) The music was so much fun and reminded me of my first girls’ holiday to Ibiza when I was 16 years old! (How my mother let me go at that age, I’ll never know…) At the end of the cycle, we each received a free shot of carrot and ginger to help with energy levels. I was buzzing and can’t wait to do it again next year.
Walcot House raised £680 in total: £340 for Macmillan and £340 for We Get It. Thank you so much to Debbie at Walcot House who continues to support us in so many ways – we really can't thank her enough. We’d also like to thank all the Walcot House staff, the people who baked cakes (including We Get It team members Jo and Sarah), those who donated money on the day and everyone who took part in the charity spin with us.
We’re so grateful, as this money means we’re able to help more people dealing with cancer in the Bath community.
